The First World War education project
19 / 08 / 2014Minister announces launch of classroom resources to commemorate the centenary of the Great War.
On 1 March 2012 the First Minister appointed Sir Deian Hopkin as his Expert Adviser on the First World War to advise the Welsh Government on how Wales should prepare an appropriate, interesting and inclusive commemorative programme.
The Welsh Government has commissioned the National Library of Wales to develop bilingual, exciting, education resources that will be tailor-made for Welsh schools.
They will be cross curricular and will contain audio, video, images and texts pertaining to the First World War. They will also include suggested lesson plans and have links for use against the Literacy and Numeracy Framework.
Stage 1 of the resource pack (external link) contains 3 introductory modules:
- Overview of the First World War
- The Origins of the First World War
- Wales, Britain and the World in 1913.
The Minister for Education and Skills, Huw Lewis said: “These resources will enable the young people of Wales to understand how Wales and the world changed forever as a result of this conflict and the following peace conferences.”
